Buying a diesel compact tractor: 304G2, 404GT or 504GT?
The short answer
If you are buying a diesel compact tractor, start by choosing the power based on your heaviest implement, then look at dimensions, implements and service. Knegt offers three diesel models: the 304G2 (25 hp), the 404GT (40 hp) and the 504GT (50 hp), starting at €13,750, €17,950 and €20,950 excluding VAT.
A diesel tractor makes sense if you work long days outdoors, far from a power socket, and want to refuel quickly. If you often work indoors, in stables or in noise-sensitive surroundings, an electric Knegt is worth considering. Below you can read what to look for and how to choose.
Knegt's three diesel compact tractors
Knegt has been developing and building compact tractors in its own workshop in Veldhoven, the Netherlands, since 2006. Alongside the electric range there are three diesel models, built for power, reliability and versatility:
- Knegt 304G2: 25 hp, from €13,750 excl. VAT. The entry-level model, compact and manoeuvrable for yards, stables, riding schools and gardens.
- Knegt 404GT: 40 hp with a Stage V engine, from €17,950 excl. VAT. An all-rounder for mowing, transport and grounds maintenance.
- Knegt 504GT: 50 hp with a Stage V engine, from €20,950 excl. VAT. The most powerful diesel model, for intensive work and larger implements.
The starting prices apply to the basic version without options. All Knegt tractors have four-wheel drive and power steering. The diesel tractors have a 30-litre tank and a manual transmission. The models differ in length, width, engine power and the implements you can use with them, among other things.
What to look for when buying a diesel compact tractor
A compact tractor is an investment for years. Go through these points before you choose a model:
- Power: choose based on your heaviest implement and how long you use it at a stretch, not on your lightest jobs.
- Implements and connections: check that the linkage, PTO and hydraulics suit the mower, tiller, sweeper or spreader you want to use. Your dealer will check the combination for each model.
- Dimensions and manoeuvrability: in a narrow yard, between stables or in a greenhouse, a tight turning circle often matters more than extra horsepower.
- Front loader and cab: a front loader and a cab are useful for loading work and for working in bad weather. Ask your dealer which options are available for each diesel model.
- Transmission: the diesel tractors have a manual transmission. Ideally, take a test drive yourself to see whether that suits your work.
- Maintenance and parts: a service is due every 350 hours or once a year. Knegt keeps parts in stock, so your tractor is back at work quickly.
- Warranty: all new Knegt tractors come with a two-year full factory warranty, with the option of extended warranty packages.
Diesel or electric: which suits your work?
Knegt builds both, so you can choose based on your work rather than on what is available. In short:
- Choose diesel if you work long days outdoors, at locations without charging facilities, and want to refuel quickly. The purchase price is lower.
- Choose electric if you work in stables, greenhouses, industrial buildings or around animals and visitors. An electric Knegt is quiet and emission-free, with no engine oil, fuel filters or injectors.
- Purchase: the electric 304G2E, 404G2E and 504G3E start at €37,950, €45,950 and €52,950 excluding VAT. This is offset by lower energy and maintenance costs.
- Tax: in the Netherlands, electrically powered mobile machinery is included in the 2026 Environment List of the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO, code E 3413). This Dutch scheme, the environmental investment allowance (MIA), may give Dutch businesses a tax benefit on an electric tractor and is aimed at electric drive. Outside the Netherlands, other rules apply. Always ask your accountant or adviser what applies to you.
Still in doubt? Compare your operating hours per year, your work locations and your energy costs. A dealer will be happy to work out both options with you.
Five steps to the right diesel tractor
- Step 1: List your main jobs per season and note the heaviest implement you will use.
- Step 2: Measure your site: passageways, gates, stable doors and the space to turn.
- Step 3: Choose the model: the 304G2 for light, compact work, the 404GT as an all-rounder and the 504GT for heavier, intensive work.
- Step 4: Put together your version in the configurator on the models page, with the implements and accessories you need.
- Step 5: Book a demo or consultation and request a quote, including maintenance and, if you wish, an extended warranty package.
